Flowering tea history and origins

The history of flowering tea originated from the Yunnan province in the far southeast of China. The history of blooming tea is not entirely clear, some believe it to be a modern creation, whereas others trace it back to the 10th century.  It is possible that the art of shaping and displaying tea was used in the royal courts of China, although purely for visual purposes, rather than drinking.

In the 1980’s, more flowering teas began to emerge, and soon after they gained popularity in the Western market. Since then, blooming tea popularity has continued to grow.

How to make flowering tea?

  • Preparation

To make the finest blooming tea, premium green tea and flowers are chosen. Tea artists will cover tea and flowers with wet cloths so that they will be softened and can be easily sewn together. For each tea bulb approximately 6-8g of tea will be used.

  • Sewing

First, the tea leaves are sewed together as a bundle using natural white cotton string. Second flowers are winded around the tea leaves with the same string. Lastly more flowers are artistically arranged and hand-sewn into the tea bundle. It’s important to keep going back and forth to ensure that tea leaves and flowers are not too loose nor too tight.

  • Binding

Now that the tea ball is almost done, flowers are tucked into the palm and rolled to make it into a ball shape. More thread is used to wind around the tea bulb to secure the shape. Then the tea bulb is wrapped with white cloth and baked to dry completely.

The men and women who create these delicate bulbs are masters in the craft, but even they can only produce a small number of bulbs per hour. In fact, the contents of just one packet of 20 flowers would take almost an hour to make.

How to drink blooming tea?

Flowering tea is best served in a glass teapot or large glass cup, in order to fully enjoy the performance of the opening blossom. Use freshly boiled water and infuse for 5-8 minutes. Flowering tea can be re-infused by adding more hot water

When steeped, the bulb slowly unfurls in a process resembling a blooming flower to reveal the beautifully laid out tea leaves and the flowers inside, which emerge as a stunning centrepiece. The combination of tea leaves and flowers produce a wonderfully scented liquor from pale yellow to golden in colour and often a light flavour with sweet notes.

In Chinese tradition, blooming tea symbolises long life and harmony, making it the perfect gift.

What are the flowering tea benefits?

Flowering teas often contain antioxidants and other beneficial compounds found in traditional teas, promoting relaxation and offering potential health benefits. Paired with green tea and flowers, blooming teas are powerful blends rich in antioxidants, which might work to combat inflammation, and promote digestive well-being. This combination helps us achieve balance, both internally and externally, resulting in a radiant and harmonious glow.
