There’s an array of types of tea in Japan, two of the main ones being Sencha and Matcha.

Sencha, or ‘infused tea’, is perhaps the most popular tea in the country, and comes in many different varieties. Matcha has been around for thousands of years, and was introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks. It’s a combination of these two which produces Genmai Matcha – one of the 3 teas found in our Sushi Tea Collection.

However, Genmai Matcha is more than just a blend of teas. The addition of toasted rice brings a nutty flavour, and the green powdered matcha creates a brightly coloured cup. Originally, the rice was added to make the tea last longer, but it creates a uniquely sweet taste. A cloudy tea with the feel of velvet, Genmai Matcha is delicate and calming. You really need to try it experience all of these sensations. The good news is that, for a complex tea, it’s not difficult to make. Just let your boiling water cool to 80 degrees and brew for 2-3 minutes.

We recommend this tea as an introduction to the Sushi Tea Collection, which features another Sencha-based tea, Sencha Yabukita, and the much-prized variety Gyokuro. And now, there’s a new addition to our range: Premium Matcha is a ceremonial grade powdered green tea with nothing else added. The perfect introduction to Japanese tea culture.
