The Chitra Collection

Tea is a centuries-old tradition woven into the history, art and culture of civilisations across the world. Through The Chitra Collection, the world’s largest privately owned collection of historic teawares, Newby Teas is committed to preserving this rich heritage for generations to come.

A Legacy Preserved

Founded by our Chairman, Nirmal Sethia, in 2011, The Chitra Collection protects the traditions of tea. Each piece reflects craftsmanship, cultural exchange and the central role tea has played in societies across the world.

The World’s Finest Teawares

With nearly 3,000 objects spanning more than a thousand years, the collection includes teapots, caddies and complete services made in silver, gold, porcelain and rare materials. From Yixing teapots to ornate European sets, each object tells a story of craftsmanship, history and international trade.

A Resource for Learning

Scholars, researchers and students are welcomed to explore the collection through guided tours. These visits reveal the history, symbolism and cultural importance of tea, inspiring future generations to appreciate and preserve its heritage.

Exhibitions

Select objects are regularly loaned to museums and cultural institutions, opening tea heritage to wider audiences. Collaborations with organisations such as The Goldsmiths’ Centre showcase how tea continues to influence art and design today.
